Omicron spike: Which states, UTs have imposed restrictions on New Year celebrations?

The number of Omicron cases in the country has increased by many folds in the last few days. India has reported 961 Omicron cases till date with 263 cases in Delhi and 252 in Maharashtra. The rapid spike has forced several state governments to impose various restrictions during the new year to keep in check the highly contagious strain.

Headline8 brings a list of the states and Union Territories which have imposed restrictions on New Year celebrations:

Delhi

The national capital has recorded the highest number of Omicron cases in the country and as such ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued. Night curfew has been imposed in the city from 10 PM to 5 AM. Also, restaurants, bars, and public transports have been ordered to operate at 50% seating capacity.

Maharashtra

The South Western state has recorded the 2nd highest number of Omicron cases in India and to contain further spread of the strain, the state government has prohibited the gathering of more than five persons in public places between 9 PM and 6 AM. Restaurants wil have to operate with 50% capacity. Meanwhile, New Year celebration programmes have been banned in any closed or open space in Mumbai by its civic body.

Karnataka

A 10-day night curfew has been imposed in the state from 10 PM to 5 AM. Besides, new year celebrations has been banned at pubs, restaurants, hotels and external spaces, especially those celebrating with DJs. Also, pubs and clubs have been asked to operate with 50% of their seating capacity from December 30 to January 2.

Kerala

New Year celebrations has been banned in the state during the night hours. In addition, pubs, restaurants and bars will have to operate with 60% capacity.

Madhya Pradesh

In a bid to check the spread of Omicron, the state government has imposed night curfew from 11 PM to 5 AM

Gujarat

Night curfew in eight cities of the state has been extended by two hours in view of the Omicron spread. The curfew in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, and Gandhinagar would be in force from 11 PM to 5 AM instead of 1 AM to 5 AM.

Uttar Pradesh

A night curfew has been imposed in the state from 11 PM to 5 AM.

Odisha

Additional restrictions have been imposed in the state on New Year celebrations until January 2. Celebrations has been banned in hotels, clubs, restaurants, parks, convention halls, and other public places across the state.
