Mumbai Police on Tuesday has sent a notice to Arnab Goswami, Republic TV’s Editor-in-chief under section 108 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrCP). It also issued a show-cause notice to him over his communal comments during his coverage of the Palghar lynching case and also the Bandra migrant incident in April this year.
He was asked to appear before Special Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner of Police of Worli division on Friday.
Goswami on April 21 conducted a debate on his show about the attack on two monks and a driver in Palghar, Maharashtra. During the debate, he asked whether it was a crime to be a Hindu and wear saffron clothes.
According to an official, a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Goswami for giving provocations to cause riots and promoting hostility between different religious groups. Various other sections have also been registered against him relating to his debate show.
The notice cited that his comments could create communal hatred and disharmony between Hindus and Muslims.
The notice also mentioned that before the lynching incident, Goswami also made inflaming comments about the crowd of migrant laborers that assembled outside Bandra Station on April 14 amid the nationwide lockdown.
The Mumbai police also registered a case against him relating to this incident.
