A French history teacher who had shown caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in his class was on Friday beheaded outside his school.
The assailant, whose identity has not been established, was shot by police as they tried to arrest him and later died of his injuries.
French police said that the incident took place on the outskirts of Paris at around 5 pm (1500 GMT) near a school in Conflans Saint-Honorine, a western suburb of the French capital.
According to French President Emmanuel Macron, the assailant had a hallmark of “Islamic terrorism”.
Media reports added that the Police is treating the incident as “a murder linked to a terrorist organisation” and related to a “criminal association with terrorists”.
It is reported that the victim was a French history teacher who recently discussed the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in class.
Police on Friday said that they arrived at the crime scene after receiving a call about suspicious individual loitering near the school.
Upon their arrival, they found the dead man and saw a suspect armed assailant with a knife-like weapon who threatened them to kill as they tried to arrest him.
However, it is reported that the police opened fire and injured him severely, who later died of his injuries.
