Dehing Patkai Wildlife sanctuary which is located in Dibrugarh district has been upgraded to national park.
Earlier in July, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the forest officials to develop a notification and also hold a public hearing considering the opinion of the reserve dwellers.
Assam would now six national parks. Dehing Patkai had got the wildlife sanctuary status in 2004.
Dehing-Patkai landscape has been a site for legal and illegal coal mining. In April 2020, a coal mining project in the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve was approved by the National Board for Wildlife of India.
