Gearing up for the Assam Assembly polls, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be starting his election campaign in the state from Sivasagar.
The former Indian National Congress (INC) President will visit Sivasagar, Assam on February 14. He is also expected to address a gathering at Boarding Field, Sivasagar. The gathering is expected to comprise atleast 20,000 party members from Sivasagar and other districts.
This will be Rahul Gandhi’s maiden visit to the poll-bound Assam this year. Earlier, in January, Congress party has announced its alliance with five political parties to challenge Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Assam Assembly polls.
While addressing a press conference on January 20 in Guwahati, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Ripun Bora said, “In upcoming Assam Assembly polls, Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist), CPI (Marxist-Leninist) and Anchalik Gana Morcha will fight together to oust BJP. We will keep our doors open for other regional and anti-BJP parties to join us.”
The elections for the 126-seat Assam Assembly are likely to take place in April-May this year. However, the election schedule is yet to be announced by the Election Commission of India.
It is to be noted that Sivasagar and Nazira assemblies have been under Congress’s reign for many years. The visit of Rahul Gandhi will be a major boost for the political party in fighting the upcoming polls.
