In wake of the ongoing pandemic of the COVID-19 situation in the nation, Assam’s famous annual Ambubachi festival held at Kamakhya Temple has been called off, said the temple’s management authority on Monday. Rituals for the Ambubachi festival that is set to begin from June 22 (Tuesday) and end on June 26 will be held, but, no devotees will be allowed to enter the temple premises till June 30, said the managing authority of the temple.
This is the second year in a row that the Ambubachi Mela of the Shakti Peeth atop the Nilachal Hills has been canceled owing to the pandemic situation of the country
Speaking to the media, Mohit Chandra Sarmah, Doloi at Kamakhya Temple said, “The doors of the temple will be closed at 2.06 pm (pravritti) with the beginning of Ambubachi and will conclude on June 26 at around 2.29 am (Nivritti) end of the Ambubachi.”
Adding Doloi also said that the management committee has been strictly following the Government’s SOP in the temple’s premises.
Meanwhile, pandas and pujaris said that they are solely dependent on the devotees and they are suffering due to this COVID situation from last year.
Besides that, the metro district administration on Monday in a notice said it has decided to cancel Ambubachi Mela after it has received a letter from the Doloi management of the Kamakhya Devalaya.
In the notice it is stated, “Accordingly, lodging and accommodation for the devotees within the premises of Kamakhya temple will not be allowed to operate until further order.”
