Two IndiGo planes averted a probable mid-air collision in Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru just after their take-off in the Morning of January 9. The Kolkata-bound flight was numbered 6E455 while the one departing for Bhubaneswar was numbered 6E426, said senior officials of the Directoate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The potential for a mid-air collision is increased by miscommunication, mistrust, error in navigation, lack of situational awareness or lack of collision-avoidance system. Almost all modern large aircraft are fitted with a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS ) designed based on the signals from aircraft transponders which alerts the pilots if a potential collision with another aircraft is imminent.
According to the aviation regulator, a ‘breach of separation’ takes place when two aircraft breach the minimum mandatory vertical or horinzontal distance in an air space. In today’s case there was an interval of approximately 5 minutes between each flight taking off. Both the planes were moving towards each other after the departure. However the collision was avoided after an approach radar controller gave a diverging heading, said the DGCA.
