The Rajasthan High Court has recently announced that titles like Raja, Nawab, Rajkumar is prohibited terms in courts, public offices, tribunals. According to Articles 14, 18 and 363 A of the Constitution of India such titles have been prohibited. According to the court the restrictions will also apply in the public domain as well as public documents and public offices.
The court has announced that any title awarded to the citizen of India by a foreign state cannot be accepted nor be used and no such title other than military or academic distinctions can be conferred other than by the State.
The prohibition was not objected by the petitioners, respondents or any other person.
The advocate general Mr. M.S. Singhvi says that the State of Rajasthan do endorse the view that use of prefixes and suffixes, other than military or academic distinction in terms of Article 18 are abolished aand are violative of article 14.
