Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has urged people to take the pledge to save every drop of water on World Water Day. On this occassion, he has also appreciated all those individuals and organisations who are working towards saving water.
In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister said;
“Over the last few years, it is heartening to see water conversation become a mass movement, with innovative efforts taking place in all parts of the nation. I would like to appreciate all those individuals and organisations who are working towards saving water.”
Since 1993, World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. This day is celebrated every year to highlight the importance of freshwater.
It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis, in support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
In Assam, Guwahati is the most affected region from this water crisis. However, the Guwahati Municipal corporation has not taken any significant steps towards solving this problem.
Several water supply projects under JICA in Guwahati are yet to be completed and are way past their prescribed time limit.
Moreover, a probe into allegations of corruption and anomalies against the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) supported water supply project in Guwahati was also announced by the government of Assam on February, 2022.
We need to work together to sustainably manage this precious resource. Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind.
Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere .Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives.
Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change gets worse, groundwater will become more and more critical.
