A total of 12 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday for allegedly fishing. The fishermen were from Tamilnadu.
The 12 fishermen are now in the custody of the Sri Lankan Navy.
The fishermen were fishing near Katchatheevu late night when they were arrested. The incident took place amid the major economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
It is also noted that in February Fishermen in Sri Lanka set up a fleet to demand further efforts by Government to protest against poaching by Indian fishermen. Alleged fishing done by foreign crews hampers the business of Sri Lankan fishermen. In fact many fishermen lose their lives in confrontations with foreigners.
Report says that in an another incident where Sri Lankan forces came to guard fisheries destroyed Indian fishing gear, charging the vessels and in that violent episode of encounter 5 Indian fishermen lost their lives.
