The state cabinet of Assam has approved Rs 839.95 crore for the formation of five new commando battalions in the state. The battalions will be stationed in vulnerable areas, enhancing the Assam Police’s ability to combat crime and serving as a key component of counterinsurgency operations.
Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah stated this during a press conference following the meeting. The five battalions will be stationed in the districts of Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong, Sivasagar, Biswanath, and Tinsukia.
In a tweet on Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this was one of several decisions made at the cabinet meeting regarding the formation of new battalions, the development of new ropeways, the establishment of the Assam Complex in Maharashtra, the promotion of forensic education, the relaxation of norms for EWS candidates, the protection of ward commissioner tenure, and so on.
In June of last year, the Assam government decided to form ten new commando battalions modelled after the National Security Guard (NSG) to help the state police fight crime.
