Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that the state will use no fossil fuels by 2031.
At a function following the inauguration of a solar plant in Assam’s Udalguri district, Asaam CM stated, “The complete elimination of the use of petrol, diesel in Assam will happen by 2031. Electric vehicles will be used as a substitute for fossil fuel.”
According to a senior government official, Assam plans to generate 50,000 MW of solar power in the future. Furthermore, the government has issued an order to reduce carbon emissions by 2030.
In the next five years, the Assam government intends to rely on solar energy for 50% of its electricity. Sarma inaugurated a 25 MW solar power plant in the Udalguri district on Tuesday.
Another two 25 MW solar power plants are being built in Assam’s Samaguri and Nagaon districts. “The state government is also planning to set up floating solar energy plants on lakes in the state which may produce up to 1,000 MW of energy,” said the Chief Minister.
