According to an Assam Police official, the West Bengal CID, which sent a team to Assam last week, summoned a Guwahati-based businessman to Kolkata today in connection with the investigation into the Jharkhand MLA cash seizure case.
According to an Assam Police official, the West Bengal CID, whose team visited various locations in Guwahati last week, has passed the summons notice at the premises of businessman Ashok Dhanuka’s house here.
According to media reports, Dhanuka and his son Ghanshyam Dhanuka are close to a top political family in Assam’s ruling BJP.
According to the official, the Bengal CID team has requested Ashok Dhanuka to appear at the Bengal CID headquarters in Bhavani Bhavan on Monday at 10 a.m.
According to a source, the CID team in Guwahati went to Dhanuka’s house on Saturday to serve the notice but were unable to meet with the businessman because the house was guarded by the Assam Police.
The Bengal CID team arrived in Guwahati to collect CCTV footage and other evidence in connection with the arrest of three Congress MLAs from Jharkhand. They obtained CCTV footage from Guwahati’s Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and a hotel.
The three Jharkhand Congress MLAs — Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kacchap, and Naman Bixal Kongari — were arrested by police in Howrah’s Panchla, with a large amount of cash in their vehicle on July 30 evening.
The MLAs told police that the money was intended for purchasing sarees from the wholesale market in Burrabazar, central Kolkata, to distribute in their constituencies on World Tribal Day. The MLAs and two of their associates, including the driver, who were arrested with them, have been remanded in CID custody until August 10.
Even as the issue roiled politics in Bengal, Assam, and Jharkhand, the Congress suspended three MLAs, accusing them of plotting to destabilise the state government.
