Manipur: The International Wrestling Federation (IWF) has dropped the doping charge against Sanjita Chanu after more than two and a half years of investigation due to “non-conformities” in the handling of her samples. Chanu had tested positive for a banned substance in May 2018.
On the recommendation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the IWF made this decision. The 26-year-old wrestler, who claimed innocence since the beginning, was informed about the final verdict via an e-mail signed by Lilla Sagi IWF’s legal counsel.
Chanu has demanded an apology from the IWF and also compensation for the trauma she has endured.Chanu further added that she would file a case the against the IWF to Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Cleared of the doping charges, Sanjita Chanu is hopeful of getting the accolades she deserves starting from the prestigious Arjuna Award.Chanu has been trying for the coveted Award for the past four years.
“I have always performed well and have two medals in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and in Gold Coast without doping. I am lifting for 11-12 years. I don’t know why I have been ignored for this award till now,” Chanu told PTI from Manipur.
Sanjita Chanu had won back to back gold medals in the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth games in the 48kg and 53kg categories respectively.
