Guwahati: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will visit Baghjan oil blowout site to take stock of the ongoing operation to stop the blaze. Union minister Pradhan has already arrived in Guwahati. He will be accompanied by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal during his visit to the site.
Hundreds of people in the Baghjan area have left their homes to save themselves from the blaze. More than 50 houses were damaged due to the massive fire. The Baghjan 5 oil well blowout has affected the biodiversity in the region. The Union Petroleum Ministry has constituted a three-member high-level committee to investigate the fire incident.
Earlier Assam agriculture minister Atul Bora went to Baghjan to take stock of the ongoing operation to control fire. But the minister faced massive protests from an irate mob which assembled at Baghjan area to raise voice against the government’s failure to control the fire. Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati jointly reviewed the ongoing efforts to control the gas well fire at Baghjan.
Experts from Oil India Limited, ONGC and Crisis Management Team briefed in detail the steps being taken to bring the blaze under control during the review meeting. The review meeting was also joined by Assam industries & commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary from Tinsukia and his team who are assessing the ground situation in Baghjan.
