Guwahati: Three police officials were suspended on Tuesday in Jorhat district after a youth died under custody. A joint team of Army and Police took Jayanta Borah under custody on his involvement with ULFA-I.
The suspended officers were Titabor Sub-divisional Police Officer Amit Hojai (APS), Officer in-charge of Borholla Police Station, Mintu Handique (Sub-Inspector) and Bekajan Police Outpost in-charge Gopal Dolley.
According to sources, it is said that Police had no information about Jayanta Borah’s involvement with ULFA-I and the operation against the deceased was launched on the basis of Army input. On Monday, at around 1 A.M., Army from 244 Field Regiment in Chiraideo and police of Borholla Police station and Bokajan outpost in Titabor detained 30 year old Jayanta from his residence in Borholla area.
On Tuesday, State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora visited deceased Jayanta Borah’s house in Borholla area. Mr. Atul Bora announced an ex-gratia of ₹ 6 Lakh to the family members. He also promised to provide a government job to any of the next to kin of the deceased.
Mr. Atul Bora informed that the State Chief Minister Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal had ordered a commissioner-level inquiry into the matter. IAS officer Mr. Lalit Gogoi was entrusted to conduct the probe and submit a report within a week. Atul Bora pledged that the case will be tried in a fast-track court to ensure speedy trial.
Mrinal Talukdar, the Superintendent of Police of Jorhat said that a case has been registered under section 302 (Punishment for murder), 120 B (Punishment for Criminal Conspiracy) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code after the mother of the deceased lodged a police complaint against both police and army.
