Sports Desk: World No 1 Novak Djokovic who is under heavy criticism for hosting the ill-advised Adria Tour during the COVID-19 pandemic has become the fourth participant of the exhibition to test positive for the novel corona virus. Djokovic tested positive on Tuesday.
Immediately after returning to Belgrade from Zardar, Croatia, Djokovic along with his family and team members underwent a COVID-19 test where he and his wife Jelena tested positive for the virus while his two children tested negative and are safe.
“The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested. My result is positive, just as Jelena’s, while the results of our children are negative.” Djokovic said in a statement.
Djokovic also said that he will remain in self-isolation for 14 days and apologized to anyone who became infected as a result of the series.
Croatia’s Borna Coric, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and Viktor Troicki have previously tested positive after playing in Djokovic’s Adria Tour exhibition tournament in the Balkan region.
Djokovic is under fire for hosting the charity tournament and bringing in players from other countries amid the pandemic.
Djokovic organized the exhibition series in Croatia and Serbia and no social distancing measures were observed at the matches in both the countries.
“Everything we did in the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions.Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region.” Djokovic said defending his actions.
