Guwahati: As Assam is reeling under the corona virus pandemic, there comes more bad news for the people as floods and landslides create havoc in the state.
More than 9.26 lakh people in 2,071 villages of 23 districts in Assam have been hit by massive floods that began early last week. 20 people have lost their lives in the natural calamity ever since it started.
As if this was not enough, 23 more people have been killed in landslides in the state since May 22.
The worst-hit districts according to an Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) official are – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong and Tinsukia.
“Over 9.26 lakh people affected by the floods and over 68,806 hectares of crop areas were badly affected due to the floods. Around 27,308 people took shelter in 193 relief camps,” an official told news agency IANS.
Floodwater has also affected 5,86,407 big animals, 3,08,866 small animals and 6,32,559 poultry.
Following incessant rainfall in many parts of the State, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kamrup (Metro), Goalpara and Dhubri, the Burhidehing in Dibrugarh, the Dhansiri in Golaghat, the Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, the Kopili in Nagaon, the Puthimari in Kamrup, the Pagladiya in Nalbari, the Manas and Beki in Barpeta and the Sonkosh in Dhubri.
