News Desk: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹ 2 Lakh each to the next of kin to all people who lost their lives in the Assam flood.
The flood in Assam state continues to worsen and has taken the lives of many. It has wreaked havoc in the Eastern State of Assam and more than 16 Lakh people were affected in 21 districts.
PM Modi from his PMO twitter handle tweeted: “PM @narendramodi has sanctioned ex gratia of ₹ 2 Lakh each for the next of kin of persons who lost their lives due to floods in Assam from the PM National Relief Fund.”
This decision came after PM Modi spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and reviewed the current situation which resulted due to heavy rain and resultant flood. PM Modi assured Sarbananda Sonowal of all possible assistance from the Central government.
So far, the flood in Assam has claimed 33 lives and more than 16 Lakh people affected in 21 districts.
To comfort the flood-displaced people, district administrations have set up nearly 163 relief camps and distribution centers across 16 districts where currently 12,597 people are taking shelter. The authorities have distributed rice, dal, salt, mustard oil along with other relief materials such as tarpaulin, baby food, snacks, candle, matchbox, drinking water, milk, biscuit, and cattle feed.
Officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that 18 persons have died in Barpeta, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari and Udlaguri districts due to flood since last week, while 24 others were killed in landslides since May 22. ASDMA also reported that embankments, roads, bridges, culverts, and many other infrastructures have been damaged at various places in Dibrugarh, Baksa, Nagaon, Barpeta, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Morigaon, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar and Kokrajhar districts.
