Assam: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) on August 22 took a very crucial decision. The AHSEC is going to reduce the Higher Secondary syllabus by 30 percent. This is done only for the academic year of 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to sources, the council had a meeting with its academic standing committee. The committee gave its nod to scrap off 30 percent of the syllabus. This decision is a one-time measure to ease the load of students in this pandemic.
Keeping in view the loss of almost 3 months in the present academic year, the government took the decision.
In AHSEC-affiliated institutions, the HS Second Year classes usually start from the end of April. Also, the final exams commence from mid-February.
However, due to the pandemic situation, there is a loss of a significant number of academic days. Also, amid the lockdown, all academic institutions are now in closure.
There was concern at various levels over AHSEC’s silence over either reducing the syllabus or postponing the HS Second Year exam timings.
The reduction in the course will include both HS First Year and HS Second Year curriculum. The formal announcement will be given on or before August 31.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CBSE has already reduced their 2020-21 syllabus by 30 percent. The reduction in the syllabus is for the students of class IX to class XII.
This step will ease the curriculum load on students. The ongoing pandemic has hampered the academic activities in Assam.
The state government has drawn up a preliminary plan to reopen schools. The decision is, particularly for higher classes. Classes will commence from September in a staggered manner. The government took this decision after getting the nod to go-ahead from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
