National: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made the use of FASTag mandatory. This is for availing return journey discounts or any other exemptions on Toll Fee Plazas.
Users can claim a discount while making the return journey. However, the return journey must be within 24 hours. Also, a valid functional FASTag is also a must for any other local exemptions.
On August 24, a Gazette notification no. 534 E was notified in this respect. This notification is to amend the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
The new rule is another step towards promoting the use of digital payments. Digital payments on Fee Plazas of National Highways will have positive effects. The fee payable towards such discounts shall be paid through pre-paid instruments. Also, through smart cards or through FASTag. The payment can also be done by the onboard unit (transponder) or any other such devices.
The amendments to the Rules will enable:
Discount on a return journey within 24 hours. This will be through FASTag or such other device. It is automatic and there is no requirement for a pass.
For discounts on all other cases, having a valid FASTag is very necessary.
The amendment will also enable that in cases where there is a discount available for a return journey within 24 hours, there is no need for a prior receipt of intimation. The citizen will get the discount automatically if the return journey is made within 24 hours. Bit, there must be a valid and functional FASTag on the vehicle.
