Every year on 22nd July we celebrate the adoption of our National Flag. It was first adopted on 22nd July, 1947 by the Constituent Assembly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to celebrate National Flag Day with few snippets from history.

Our National Flag has undergone many changes over the years. It took 90 years to finally adopt to present Tiranga. Lets take a look at the evolution of our national flag:
The First Flag was introduced by the British during their reign in 1857.
- The first national flag is said to be hoisted on August 7, 1906 in the Parsee Bagan Square,Calcutta. The flag composed of three horizontal strips of red, yellow and green
- The second flag is said to be hoisted in 1907 in Parris by Madame Cama and other revolutionaries. Known as Berlin Committee flag, first raised by Bhikaiji Cama in 1907.
- The third flag is said to be hoisted in 1917 during Home Rule Movement by Dr. Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak.
- The fourth flag is said to be hoisted in 1921, which was prepared by an Andhra youth who took it to Gandhiji during All India Congress Committee session at Bezwada (now Vijayawada). It was made up of two colours, red and green, representing Hindus and Muslims, two major communities, Gandhiji suggested to put white to represent the remaining communities and the spinning wheel to symbolise progress of the Nation.
- The year 1931 was a landmark in the history of the flag. . A resolution was passed adopting a tricolor flag as our national flag.This flag was saffron, white and green in colour with Mahatma Gandhi’s spinning wheel at the center.
- On July 22, 1947, our National Flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. The colours and their significance remained same but in place of the spinning wheel Dharma Chakra of Emperor Asoka was adopted.
