Guwahati: Increase in Crimes over Past 6 Years

Guwahati has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of thefts, murders, and other crimes over the past six years, information released by the Assam Government during the ongoing Budget Session of the Assembly shows.
The city recorded 23,311 thefts in the period from April 2016 to February 2022, a sharp increase over the 13,740 cases recorded between 2011 to March 2016.

The figures were announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the State’s Home portfolio, in reply to a question raised by AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita on Monday, March 28.

Moreover, apart from thefts, incidents of kidnapping, pickpocketing, murder, and looting in Guwahati have also risen alarmingly over the same period.

Further, there were 3,648 cases of kidnapping in Guwahati between 2016 and 2022, a sizeable increase of over 2,546 such cases registered between 2011 and 2016. Similarly, incidents of murder rose from 395 to 425 over the same period.

Overall, Guwahati recorded 31,005 crime cases between April 2016 to February 2022, over 18,666 cases between 2011 and March 2016.
