Congress MLA Ninang Ering in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly had submitted a Private Member Bill on the floor of the assembly on March 11.
In this bill, she appealed to introduce a system to provide leave to women on the first day of their monthly menstrual cycle.
Introducing the bill, the Congress MLA also advocated the introduction of a similar system in Arunachal citing exemption from attendance to school and college girls in Bihar and Kerala on the first day of the menstrual cycle.
As per a publication in The Hindu, the MLAs refused to discuss this issue on the floor of the Assembly (Arunachal Pradesh Assembly). BJP MLA Lokam Tassa said: “Assembly is a sacred place; such dirty things should be discussed here but such issues should be discussed on the floor of the State Commission for Women. ”
The English daily quoted MLA who said, “In our community, menstrual women sleep near the kitchen and do not come in contact with anyone during that time of the month. Another BJP MLA Tana Hali Tara said, “Women are unhygienic during that cycle in our tradition and therefore they do not eat food with men. ”
Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Alo Libang also opposed such type of discussion at the Assembly. He advocated that such type of issue should be discussed at Women’s organizations and commissions.
