The State Government has consolidated the Elementary Education Department and the Secondary Education Department under the new name of ‘Department of School Education.’ The merger will take effect immediately, according to a notification issued by the Governor of Assam.
According to the Notification, “consequent upon the merger, all officers and staff of the Elementary Education Department and the Secondary Education Department shall automatically be under the administrative control of the Department of School Education. All correspondence pertaining to the Elementary and Secondary Education Departments will now be made in the name of the Department of School Education.
The Notification said that “All the existing Directorates and organisations under the Elementary Education Department and the Secondary Education Department will now be under the administrative control of the Department of School Education,”
It is worth noting that the two departments were merged to facilitate the adoption of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), which stipulates a 5+3+3+4 formula in place of the previous 10+2 formula.
