Nipon Goswami, a well-known Assamese actor, passed away on Oct. 27 at the age of 80 in Guwahati’s Nemcare Hospital after a protracted illness.
According to reports, the veteran actor was brought to the intensive care unit of the cardiology department of the Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati due to deteriorating health.
Earlier in 2019, the actor was taken to the GNRC Hospital in Guwahati after slipping on his bathroom floor and injuring himself.
The octogenarian was born in Tezpur and attended the famed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he studied alongside legends such as Subhash Ghai, Navin Nischol, and Shatrughan Sinha.
Goswami made his film debut in 1957 as a child artist in Phani Sarma’s Piyali Phukan. He was born on September 3, 1942 in Kolibari, Tezpur. His father, Chandradhar Goswami, was a well-known actor, and his mother, Nirupama Goswami, was a well-known vocalist. He attended Kolibari LP School for his primary education.
Sangram was Nipon Goswami’s debut Assamese film and his first success as a lead actor. He rose to prominence with his subsequent picture, Dr. Bezbaruah, which was released in 1969, and went on to appear in several others over the next few years. He also appeared as a character actor in a few Hindi films.
He has been active in mobile theatres such as Abaahan, Kohinoor, Hengul, and Shakuntala. He also appeared in a few TV shows, including ‘Writu aahe writu jaai’
