Indian Documentary film ‘Writing With Fire’ 2021, directed by Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas has been nominated in Oscar in the category of Best Documentary Feature. The story of few Dalit women journalists from some remote area of the country risking everything to speak truth to power was filmed in 2021. The untouched Dalit caste system of India has now brought to the global by this documentary film. In a cluttered news landscape dominated by men, emerges India’s only newspaper Khabar Lahiriya run by Dalit women who break the tradition and redefine what it means to be powerful.
Writing With Fire also spotlights the rural news paper Khabar Lahariya that started in 2002 by a Delhi based NGO Nirantar from Chiratkoot in Budelkhand region. The film shows the transition of Khabar Lahariya from print to digital.
Writing With Fire has also bagged many other reputed awards including Sundance Film Festival – Audience Award, Sundance Film Festival – Soecial Jury Award,: Impact of Change. Two Indian Documentaries namely Period End of Sentence (2019) and Smile Pinky (2008) were nominated for Oscars earlier in the category of Best Document Short.
