H8 Fact Check: Tweet of former CJI Ranjan Gogoi defaming Indira Gandhi is fake

Many objectionable tweets in the name of former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and current Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi are regularly going viral on Twitter.

Recently, a tweet has gone viral which has been shared from a Twitter account having the photo and name of Ranjan Gogoi with the claim that the Muslim cook who poisoned Lal Bahadur Shastri fled to Pakistan and Indira Gandhi had been giving him life long pension.

Headline8 investigated and here is what we found out:

Claim

A Twitter account named @THEGOGAI bearing the photo and name of former CJI Ranjan Gogoi on July 30 tweeted, “The Muslim cook who poisoned Lal Bahadur Shastri fled to Pakistan, whom Indira Gandhi had been giving lifelong pension to, “Every Hindu should know this”.

This tweet has gone viral on social media. This claim has been shared with many more accounts. Screenshots of this tweet are also viral on Facebook.

Investigation

We first went to the Twitter account @THEGOGAI of the viral tweet. We found that the profile photo contained a picture of former CJI Ranjan Gogoi while the name ‘Ranjan Gogoi’ was written in Hindi followed by a sticker of the Indian National Flag. We went through the description of the account which read, “MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT ,FORMER JUDGE IN SUPREME COURT OF INDIA , 46TH CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA. (PERODY) , fan page.” In addition, the account also contained a link that led to a YouTube channel by the name Thegogai. The YouTube channel too had a picture of Ranjan Gogoi in it and four videos that were posted seven months ago.

The Twitter account @THEGOGAI has 18.8k followers and it joined the platform in October 2019.

Furthering our investigation, we searched for the official account of Ranjan Gogoi on Twitter. However, we could not find any.

Conclusion

The account @THEGOGAI is not Ranjan Gogoi’s official Twitter account and is just a parody account in his name. Thus, it is clear that former CJI and present Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi did not claim that the Muslim cook who poisoned Lal Bahadur Shastri fled to Pakistan and Indira Gandhi had been giving him life long pension.
