Doctors at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur successfully removed malignant tissues from a male patient’s cheek, lips, and neck and reconstructed it using a free flap.
According to an official report, a 40-year-old Kanglatombi worker was brought to the RIMS Hospital’s plastic surgery department ward after being diagnosed with cancer of the right face and lips. Last week, a team of plastic surgeons led by Dr Akoijam Ibohal Singh performed the surgery at the hospital’s newly opened Modular Operation Theatre.
It took at least six hours for the specialists to remove the cancerous tissues from the cheek, lips, and neck. Later, the cheek and lips were restored using a free flap obtained from the left forearm (radial forearm flap), according to the report.
Dr Pebam Manisana, Dr Nehar Sinam, Dr Manish Rajpurohit, and Dr Sidharth Mandal were among the doctors that aided the head surgeon. The patient was observed for four days in the Trauma ICU under the strict supervision of anaesthesiologists before being transferred to the first floor of the newly opened Burn Unit, according to the official.
