Guwahati Desk: On Sunday, people from Assam along with many parts of the world will witness the first Solar Eclipse for the year 2020. Millions of people from different countries will watch the much-awaited event. The Total Solar Eclipse will be visible completely only in certain areas of India.
In India, the Eclipse will start near Gharsana in Rajasthan at around 10:12 A.m. and the period of Annularity will start from 11:49 A.M. onwards. Scientists say that after a minute, the Eclipse will disappear from that place. States of Harnaya and Uttarakhand will get to witness full Annular Solar Eclipse.
People of Assam will experience partial Solar Eclipse at 10:57 A.M. and will end at 2:22 P.M. The maximum coverage of 80.07 percent will be visible at around at 12:45 P.M., it will start from Srirampur at 10:51 A.M. and end at Jagun at 2:23 P.M.
The Bijnan Prasar and the Assam Science Society have jointly undertaken a special programme for viewing the Solar Eclipse. The Science Society has trained upto 200 persons under the supervision of Bijnan Prasar. The Science Society has urged people not to view the Eclipse directly even with telescopes and binoculars. In a statement, the Science Society suggested people to view the Eclipse using safe solar filters or by creating images of the event on screens.
A Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. During this phenomenon, the Moon blocks the Sun’s rays and casts a shadow on the Earth. A Total Solar Eclipse is visible only from a very limited area on the Earth, with the three celestial bodies being in direct alignment. An Annular Solar Eclipse is a phenomenon in which the Moon is at the farthest point from the planet while passing between Earth and Sun, thus cutting a shadow over the Earth. During the phenomenon, the Moon blocks the Sun like a smaller disk making the Sun look like a ring of fire.
