News Desk: Amid the violent standoff between India and China in Eastern Ladakh and Nepal’s aggressive attitude towards India, the neighboring country Bhutan has now silently stopped releasing channel water for Indian farmers along the border in Baksa district of Assam.
According to reports, farmers in Baksa district of Assam utilizes the water flowing from a man-made irrigation channel. The farmers have been using the channel water for the growing paddy field on the Indian side since 1953.
The recent decision by the Bhutan government has caused complications for as many as 25 villages in Baksa district. Over 6000 farmers were dependent on the man-made water channel.
Bhutan government has stated that the step was taken as a part of the country’s measures to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under the banner of Kalipur-Bogajuli-Kalanadi Anchalik Dong Bandh Samiti, hundreds of farmers took part in a demonstration and demanded the Bhutan government to release the required water. The farmers also demanded the Assam government to resolve the issue quickly.
One of the members of the Samiti said that for the last five days the Dong has not supplied water to the paddy field. Both COVID-19 and stoppage of water are different issues.
She also said that in the coming days, the protest will get more intensified if the government does not take the situation seriously and resolve it.
