News Desk: Several Central agencies have alerted the Government that many Rohingya Muslim refugees and Afghans are converting to Christianity. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has prompted many Afghans and Rohingya Muslim refugees to convert to Christianity to become eligible for Indian citizenship.
According to recent reports, 25 such cases of Afghan Muslims converting to Christianity have been flagged by the agencies.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was notified on January 10, 2020. The CAA grants Indian citizenship to non-Muslim minorities who migrated to India from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Adib Ahmed Maxwell, who heads an Afghan church in Delhi stated that “Post CAA, there has been a sudden eruption in the number of Afghan Muslims waiting to convert to Christianity.”
Maxwell also said that many Afghans had applied for haven under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
According to reports, a total of 150,000-160,000 Afghans Muslims are living in various parts of Delhi. They were mainly in Lajpat Nagar, Ashok Nagar, East of Kailash.
