DoT Urges Telecom Companies To Review Their Tie-Ups With Chinese Companies

National Desk: The Department of Telecommunication is likely to ask Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and other private telecom companies to review their partnerships with Chinese technologies and equipments. Government-run companies BSNL and MTNL are also asked not to use Chinese equipments and technologies to upgrade their 4G facilities.

Indian telcos are working with major Chinese telecom equipment makers like Huawei and ZTE. The impact of this decision will be felt in terms of the much-awaited 5G trials in the country. Last December the Centre decided to allow Huawei to take part in their 5G trials.

This decision came as part of the Indian Government’s strategy to lower dependence on Chinese imports and supplies. Government agencies are likely to review the partnership with Chinese companies in other segments too.

Due to non-performance, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has also decided to terminate a tender worth ₹ 471 Crore with Beijing National Railway Research and Design Institute of Signal and Communication Group Company Limited (BNRRDISC) on Thursday. The contract was given to the Chinese company for four years but the contract was terminated due to lack of progress and the Chinese firm’s refusal to furnish technical documents. The contract was given as the Chinese company emerged as the lowest bidder (₹ 1,126.9 Crore).
