News Desk: Hindustan Unilever (HUL) on Thursday took to twitter to announce that the Indian arm of the global consumer giant is removing the word Fair from its brand.
“We’re committed to a skin care portfolio that’s inclusive of all skin tones, celebrating the diversity of beauty. That’s why we’re removing the words ‘fairness’, ‘whitening’ & ‘lightening’ from products, and changing the Fair & Lovely brand name,” the company tweeted.
HUL also said that the new name is waiting for regulatory approvals and the company expects to change the name in the next few months.
Unilever’s announcement comes after a week as rival Johnson & Johnson said that it would stop the sale of two skin-whitening creams that are sold in India.
Fair & Lovely has received considerable backlash for promoting negative stereotypes related to darker skin tones.
