Nagaland likely to get its first woman Rajya Sabha MP, Phangnon Konyak

Nagaland BJP finalize its candidate for Rajya Sabha elections.

Phangnon Konyak has been fielded for the only Rajya Sabha seat. Phangnon Konyak is currently the State Women’s Front leader of Nagaland BJP.

On the other hand, elections will be held for two seats in Assam as well as the only seat in Nagaland. However, Konyak is yet to file her nomination papers.

Meanwhile, if Phangnon Konyak is elected to the Rajya Sabha she will be the first woman Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland. Since 1963, only one woman has been elected as an MP from Nagaland. She is Rano M Saija who was elected independent to the Lok Sabha in 1977.

But no women candidates have been elected to the Rajya Sabha till date. On the other hand, no woman has been elected to the Nagaland Assembly so far.

The nomination papers will be filed at 3pm on Monday. It may be recalled that Rajya Sabha elections will be held on March 31 and counting of votes will be held on the same day. Nagaland Rajya Sabha MP KG Kenny will end his term on April 2.
