Shaheed Diwas is observed on March 23 to pay tribute to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru. The three young freedom fighters were hanged at the Lahore Central Jail in Lahore, now in Pakistan, on March 23, 1931.
On this occaision the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has declared a holiday in the state.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has urged the people of the state to visit Khatkar Kalan, the native village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, to pay tributes to the freedom fighter. Khatkar Kalan is the Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar district. Mann had taken oath as the Chief Minister on March 16 in Khatkar Kalan.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Legislative Assembly today passed a resolution to install statues of Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar at the Assembly premises.
Mann had earlier announced that he would launch the state’s anti-corruption helpline on Shaheed Diwas to enable people to expose corrupt officials. He said that it will be his personal WhatsApp number’. People can upload videos of corrupt officials asking for a bribe or indulging in other malpractices. The CM said that the AAP government will root out the corrupt system and will not let the people be harassed.
The Aam Aadmi Party stormed to power in Punjab by winning 92 seats in the 117-member Assembly, decimating all rival parties.
