Vice Presidential Election 2022: On August 6 Members of Parliament of both houses are voting for the Vice-Presidential election for NDA’s candidate Jagdeep Jhankar against its opposition Margaret Alva. Both the candidates have am impeccable political career throughout their lives.
The Vice President of India is the second highest constitutional officer in the country after the President and also ranks second in the order of precedence and first in the line of succession to the presidency. The vice president is also a member of the Parliament of India as the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Jagdeep Jhankar:
Jagdeep Dhankar is an Indian politician who is NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate for the elections that has taken place in 6 August, 2022. Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, in Kithana, Rajasthan. Dhankhar graduated with honours in physics from Maharaja’s College in Jaipur and an LLB degree from Jaipur University in 1978-79. He had done schooling from Sainik School, Chittorgarh on a full merit scholarship after his primary education from the government school at village Kithana in Jhunjhunu. Dhankar is a lawyer by profession, he came into politics in 1989 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan that same year and became a Union Minister in 1990.
Dhankar, who practised in Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court, was designated a senior advocate in 1990, the same year he became a Union minister. He was also a member of the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha from 1993 to 1998 representing Kishangarh constituency.
Dhankhar married Sudesh Dhankhar in 1979, and they have a daughter, Kamna.
On 20 July 2019, former President Ram Nath Kovind appointed him as the Governor of West Bengal. Dhankar resigned on 17 July, 2022 after being nominated as the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Margaret Alva:
Margaret Alva was announced as the joint opposition candidate for Vice President candidature against Jagdeep Jhankar. Margaret Nazareth Alva was on April 14, 1942, to a Mangalorean Christian Family at Mangalore, Karnataka. Margaret Alva obtained a BA Degree from Mount Camel College, Bangalore, and a law degree from the Government Law College in the same city. She is known to be a keen and appreciated debater during her time at college and had some involvement in the students’ movement.
On May 24, 1964, she married Niranjan Thomas Alva, Margaret Alva’s decision to enter politics in 1969 was influenced by her husband’s parents, Violet Alva and Joachim Alva, both of whom had served as Members of Parliament representing the Indian National Congress.
Margaret Alva aligned herself with the Congress which was led by Indira Gandhi and worked for its state unit in Karnataka. Margaret Alva has been a Parliamentarian for five terms and has served as a Governor of Gujarat, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan and has also been a Union Minister of the Parliamentary Affairs, Youth and Sports, women and child development, and science and technology.
In April 1974, Margaret Alva was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a representative of Congress. She served a six-year term and was then re-elected for three more six-year terms, in 1980, 1986, and 1992. On August 6, 2009, Margaret Alva became the first female Governor of Uttarakhand. She remained in the post until May 2012 at which time she was appointed the Governor of Rajasthan.
Margaret Alva filed her nomination for the vice-presidential candidate on 19 July, 2022 which was the last date of filling the nomination.
