The air quality of ‘Gateway to North-East India’, Guwahati city is now one of the worst in the country.
The air quality of the city now is even worse than Delhi and other metros in the country.
Air Quality Index (AQI) of Guwahati shot up to 346 on Monday.
As per the information was given by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI of Guwahati is considered as ‘Very Poor’. AQI more than 300 can cause serious respiratory illness.
If the AQI of Guwahati crosses 400 then air quality will be considered ‘Severe’ affecting healthy people and cause serious impacts on those with existing disease.

The Central Pollution Control Board has placed three cities including Guwahati in ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality. The names of cities with ‘Very Poor’ Air Quality are:
• Guwahati with Index Value of 346
• Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) with an Index Value of 311
• Siliguri (West Bengal) with Index Value of 307
Udupi city in Karnataka is placed in the ‘Severe’ Air Quality category with an Index Value of 403.
At the beginning of 2021, Guwahati was experiencing a period of poor air quality with an AQI index of 179 which classifies it as ‘Unhealthy’ according to recommended figures by the World Health Organization (WHO). The concentration of the pollutant PM 2.6 was recorded as 109.2 µg/m³, (microns per cubic meter).
