Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Assam proved a boon for the Congress-led ‘Grand Alliance’.
The Congress leader played a “key role” in prevailing over her party to leave the Tinsukia Assembly seat in Upper Assam to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The RJD party will be making its electoral debut in the state.
The Congress-led “Grand Alliance” in Assam got a boost on Tuesday as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) formally joined the opposition grouping.
RJD will contest one seat in the first phase of the upcoming assembly elections in the state on March 27.
RJD Assam president Shonarul Shah Mustafa confirmed the development and said “talks are on between central leaders of the RJD and the Congress to finalize the seat-sharing agreement for the second and third phase of polling.
The RJD will contest the Tinsukia constituency and has fielded Hira Devi Choudhury. Tinsukia has a large number of Hindi-speaking people.
Rashtriya Janata Dal is now the eighth party to join the Grand Alliance. The ‘Grand Alliance’ already includes:
Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), CPI, CPM, CPI(ML), and the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM).
‘Grand Alliance’ was formed to fight the upcoming election for the 126-member assembly against the BJP-led NDA.
Out of the 47 seats where voting will be held in the first phase, Congress will contest 43 constituencies. AIUDF, CPI(ML), AGM, and the RJD will fight in the four other seats.
39 assembly seats will go to polls in the second phase on April 1 and 40 constituencies will vote on April 6 in the third phase.
