Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma remembers Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan on his death anniversary
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma paid rich tributes to Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan on the occasion of his death anniversary on Wednesday, remembering the tall leader for his contribution to the state.
Taking to his Twitter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “One of the tallest figures of India’s freedom struggle, Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan was a multi-faceted personality. Offered my tribute to the worthy son of our soil on his death anniversary, which is being observed as Deshbhakti Divas by our Govt since last year.”
Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan was instrumental in shaping the state of Assam.
Tarun Ram Phukan was a politician, writer, hunter, and freedom fighter who was born on January 22, 1877. Assamese people call him “Deshbhakta” because he was a true patriot who adored his country.
Phukan moved to London after graduating from Calcutta’s Presidency College to study law and earn a Bar-at-Law degree. Cotton Collegiate School in Guwahati was where he received his education.
After becoming a barrister, Phukan returned to India and joined the Calcutta High Court. Later, he returned to Guwahati and worked as a Lecturer at Earle Law College.
Phukan joined the Congress in 1920 and was instrumental in the party’s establishment in Assam.
When the freedom movement began under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, he abandoned his flourishing practise to join the cause.
Mahatma Gandhi visited Assam in 1921 and stayed at his Bharalumukh residence in Guwahati. Gandhiji’s trusted companion was Phukan. They also participated in the “bidexi bostro dah jagya” (burning of foreign goods).
After his elder brother Late Nabin Ram Phukan returned from London, he presented him with the ancestral home. It was constructed over 120 years ago.
Phukan was arrested and imprisoned after the British declared Congress an illegal body in November 1922.
For his contributions to Assamese literature, he was elected President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha at its Goalpara session in 1927. He wrote many books, including “Jauna Tatwa,” a book about sexual hygiene, “Mur Sikar Kahini,” a book about his hunting adventures, “Stuti mala,” a hymn book, “Nigni Bhaworiar Kahini,” a book of humorous poems, and others.
“We Assamese are a distinct nationality among Indians,” he said during his presidential address to the Sahitya Sabha. “Our language is distinct, even though it is based on Sanskrit.”
Phukan was also involved in a variety of social activities, including education and upliftment of the underprivileged sections of society. He also advocated for the abolition of untouchability and gender equality.
He used to exhort Indian women to leave the confines of their homes and participate actively in national affairs. He also popularised Khadi and other Swadeshi products in Assam.
Tarun Ram Phukan died on July 28, 1939, at the age of 62.
