After a long wait of over two months, the Assam Education Department on Friday finally decided to cancel all the state board examinations.
This includes- Higher Secondary, High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and High Madrassa examinations.
However, during the last two months, students of Assam took to Twitter and Facebook demanding cancellation of exams in Assam.
In the last two months, thousands of students were in tension as they were uncertain whether exams will be held or not.
Many organizations even submitted memorandums and petitions demanding the cancellation of exams.
Among the organizations, Asom Chatra Parishad’s President Trinayan Baruah and other members met State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and submitted a memorandum.
This memorandum was submitted soon after the new BJP government was formed in Assam.
The Asom Chatra Parishad were the first organization to submit a memorandum demanding the cancellation of examinations.
A part of the memorandum to the Education Minister states –
“The whole country including Assam is suffering from Covid 19 pandemic. The pandemic has put the whole country into a standstill. The country as well as Assam has been experiencing rapid spike in Covid 19 cases.
Thousands of people lost their lives due to this pandemic.
We humbly request the concerned people to cancel Assam State Board examinations.”
Speaking to Headline 8 after the cancellation of examinations by the Assam Education Board, Asom Chatra Parishad President Trinayan Baruah stated –
“Even now there is a chance of community spread of Covid pandemic in the state. Many prominent people and hundreds of people from Assam lost their lives in the last few months. Covid 19 is a very serious pandemic, if exams were supposed to be held in classes, there is a chance of community spread.
Many students are still not able to even effort a smartphone for online classes. Students from remote areas and tea gardens are still unable to effort smartphones.
Since CBSE has decided to cancel offline examinations and introduced a Grading Assessment scheme for class 10 and 12 students.
If the Central government can change is education module, then our state government can also do so.”
