Reacting to the Mizoram border dispute, Chief Minister Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the media about the deployment and additional raising of battalions in Assam.
The border security has deployed three additional battalions and 1200 jawans will be deployed in each battalion. While a decision to raise 10 commando battalions was announced earlier, the state government will now expedite the process to deploy these commando battalions along the tensed borders of the state. These 10 commando battalions would be raised keeping the National Security Guard (NSG) as the benchmark. The CM confirmed a decision to raise a battalion in the Dhansiri area of the state to cater to the Karbi Anglong and Nagaland border.
Sarma said, “Three commando battalions will be raised at Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Silchar to be deployed in the bordering areas of Assam-Mizoram. Every battalion will have at least 1200 commandoes and therefore some 4000 commandoes will be deployed along the borders in the region.”
Earlier announcing the raising of the battalions, the Chief Minister said that these battalions will be given operational jurisdiction as well, empowering them to carry out operations in the bordering areas. CM Sarma also said that the state government will move to Supreme Court if needed but will not give even one inch of its land to Mizoram.
