Suspected militants of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) carried out the ambush. The militants first carried out an IED blast and then fired on the unit.

Havildar Pranay Kalita, hailing from Assam, Rifleman Metha Konyak from Nagaland, and Rifleman Ratan Salam from Manipur were martyred in the ambush.

Meanwhile, the injured jawans have sustained minor injuries. They are undergoing treatment in a military hospital in Leimakhong in Imphal West District.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the area which is 100 km from Imphal.

In the meantime, the Army is yet to release an official statement.

As Independence Day is close, an insurgent attack on such a scale has occurred almost after three years in Manipur.
