After embarrassing losses in the recently concluded Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections and the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) elections, the Assam Pradesh Congress has faced humiliation once again. This time around the Congress has lost its power as the opposition in the Assam Assembly.

The Assam Assembly requires a party to have one-sixth of the total strength or 21 members to be in the opposition. However, following the death of Titabor MLA Tarun Gogoi, the resignation of MLA Abdul Khalek and the expulsion of former minister Ajanta Neog and Lakhimpur MLA Rajdeep Goala from the Congress, the party now has only 20 members in 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. This has resulted in the Congress losing the power of the opposition and APCC president Debarata Saikia losing the post of the leader of opposition in the Assembly.

As a result, there will be no leader of opposition in the Assembly with no party having the minimum required number of legislators.
