In an incident of medical negligence, a senior doctor at a government hospital in Assam allegedly conducted a caesarean section, often known as a C-section, on a pregnant woman three and a half months before her due date and then stitched the wound after realising the foetus was premature.
According to the doctor, after performing the incision, he discovered that the foetus was premature and stitched back the wound before advising the pregnant woman to wait until December for another attempt. The incident occurred on August 22 at the Karimganj Civil Hospital, and the doctor who reportedly performed the C-section has been identified as senior physician Dr AK Biswas, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Karimganj Civil Hospital officials confirmed on Sunday that an investigation was underway to determine the facts, according to the report.
After the C-section attempt, the doctor allegedly attempted to manage the woman and requested her family not to share it with anybody. However, when the patient’s condition deteriorated after she was discharged from the hospital on August 31, her relatives and neighbours became concerned.
“We have received the information about the incident and we are conducting an inquiry to ascertain the facts. Any action against the doctor or anyone else, found responsible for the incident, will be taken depending on the inquiry report,” according to hospital officials.
An 11-member committee has been formed to investigate the situation, and the preliminary report was submitted on Friday, according to hospital officials.
“The preliminary report has been forwarded to the Health Department in Guwahati. We are awaiting submission of the full report,” according to the report, they stated.
According to reports, the pregnant woman was admitted to the Karimganj Civil Hospital on August 21 due to extreme pain.
According to the woman’s family, after providing her initial therapy and keeping her under surveillance for two days, the doctor opted to perform a C-section on August 23 without doing an ultrasound examination. Despite the fact that the doctor was aware that she was expected to deliver birth soon in December, he went for the surgery.
The doctor realised the foetus was premature after performing the incision and sewed back the wound, leaving the foetus intact within, according to the report. The woman was subsequently discharged from the hospital on August 31, and the doctor allegedly instructed her family not to tell anyone about the incident.
However, as the woman’s health deteriorated after she returned home, her neighbours and relatives were aware of it. The furious family members, together with relatives and neighbours, informed hospital officials, forcing them to conduct an investigation.
According to a report, the woman was admitted to the same hospital and is now receiving treatment there.
An ultrasound check performed on the woman on Friday indicated that the unborn is uninjured, according to the expectant woman’s family members.
