15th June, Guwahati: The State Government of Assam is examining legal options for submitting their plea on re-verification of names in National Register of Citizens (NRC) again in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court earlier rejected Assam Government’s and Central Government’s plea for conducting 20% sample re-verification of the NRC draft published on July 30, 2018. The re-verification will be done in districts bordering Bangladesh.
Both the Central and Assam Government had filed petitions seeking re-verification of 20% names included in the complete draft NRC.
It had been found that more than 31.1 million people were eligible to be included in the registry while leaving out more than 1.9 Million People. The final NRC list was published in August 2019.
