Assam: Gauhati HC refuses to put a stay on Mobile Internet Ban during Assam Direct Recruitment Exams

Gauhati HC

The Gauhati High Court heard a writ petition on Thursday challenging the Assam government’s decision to prohibit mobile internet connections during written examinations for Grade III posts, but issued no order.

Justice Suman Shyam heard the appeal of social activist Raju Prosad Sarma, who challenged the Assam government’s statement that mobile internet services would be suspended on August 28 and September 11.

Due to a lack of time, the hearing in the petition could not be concluded on Thursday, and Justice Shyam stated that the case will be heard again on Friday at 12:30 p.m.

On August 21, internet services were halted in 25 of Assam’s 35 districts for four hours to prevent malpractices during written examinations for Grade IV positions in various state government offices. Prohibitory orders were also issued in various districts under Section 144 Cr PC.

The exams are scheduled to take place on August 28 and September 11. More than 14.30 lakh candidates are anticipated to take recruitment examinations for approximately 30,000 Grade III and IV positions in various government ministries.

While the examination for Grade IV positions was done in two shifts on Sunday, those for Grade III positions will be held on the following two occasions. The Assam Board of Secondary Education administers all examinations.

On August 17, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that internet services would be blocked during examination hours to prevent suspected malpractices during the recruiting process.
