Amid the alleged under-reporting of Covid-19 related symptoms by the people, the Assam government Tuesday prohibited the sale of over-the-counter medicines or non-prescription medicines. The pharmacies across the state cannot sale OTC medicine without a prescription of a registered medical practitioner.
In an order by the office of the Director of Health Services Assam, mentioned, “This is to inform you that in view of Covid-19 pandemic situation, over the counter sale of medicines for Covid-19 related symptoms is prohibited without prescription of a registered medical practitioner.”
Moreover, the sale of Antipyretic drugs like paracetamol and such will be monitored. An official of the health department informed, “Medicine stores are being directed to record the details of the patient with a contact number and other details who buys medicines like paracetamol.”
The medicine stores across the state are ordered to keep a record of such patients who purchase Antipyretic drugs and furnish the record on an everyday basis to the district’s Joint Director of Health.
It is being reported that the demand for the Over-the-counter medicine in the state has increased and the Assam health department is contrasting it to the under-reporting of Covid-19 related symptoms, said the official.
