Assam police have urged leading Muslim groups and Madrassa boards to maintain tabs on teachers from outside the state and ensure that their antecedents are investigated, with police in Assam zeroing in on numerous teachers and clerics of Madrassa for alleged links with Jehadi terror outfit.
Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, the director general of police in Assam, met with the groups and the board.
He stated that the groups must verify the individual’s identity and report the information to authorities. A portal will be launched soon, where the groups will be able to offer information about the madrassas and the professors who work there.
“A committee including the members of the groups will be formed who will ensure enforcement of the rule and regulation in the madrassas,” he added.
In addition to religious education, the DGP has proposed teaching Maths, Science, and English. The groups have requested a six-month implementation period.
There was a suggestion to conduct a survey of Madrassas throughout the state. According to Mahanta, the board of non-government Assam Madrassas, All Assam Tanzim Madaris Qawmiya (AATMQ), has provided a list of 739 religious madrassas connected with them in the state. More than 1,000 unregistered madrassas or institutes exist.
The Assam government converted 700 state-funded madrassas into public schools last year. Three Madrassas were destroyed by the Assam government last month. Bulldozers demolished Markazul Ma-Arif Quariayana Madrasa, which was located in Kabaitary Part-IV village in Assam’s Bongaigaon district.
Recently, Assam police detained 37 people, including Imams and Madrasa professors, who were affiliated to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
Hafizur Rahman, a madrasa instructor, was detained on August 26 for alleged ties to a Jihadi organisation. Following the arrest of an Arabic teacher for alleged participation with Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), the administration razed a Madrassa in Assam’s Barpeta on August 29.
Jamiul Huda madrassa, run by Mustafa alias Mufti Mustafa, who was recently detained for claimed links with Bangladesh-based terror organisation Ansarullah Bangla Team & AQIS, was demolished on August 4 this year in Assam’s Moirabari district.
