Assam remembers Anundoram Borooah on his death anniversary

Assam’s first and one of the earliest Indian Civil Service officers from India, the first graduate of Assam, a lawyer Anundoram Barooah sought India’s undying soul in Sanskrit and ancient classics. On this day, In the year of 1889 Barooah lied the glory of his eternal sleep at the age of 39 in Taraknath Palit’s home.

A Sanskrit scholar, commentator, lexicographer and civil servant, is remembered for his contribution to Sanskrit studies, particularly for his grand scheme of A Comprehensive Grammar of the Sanskrit Language in twelve volumes of a thousand pages each, and his Practical English-Sanskrit Dictionary, as deserving of “the highest commendation” for its “size, range and methology.” He was the fifth Indian to senter the I.C.S., an able administrator and indefatigable Indologist from Assam. Born in 21 May, in the year of 1850 at Rajaduar, North Guwahati, Barooah joined in the Presidency college for his education.
